SOLAR DE RANDEZ

Bodegas las Orcas, making wines under its Solar de Randez label, is a small, family-owned and operated winery in the Rioja Alavesa region of Spain.  From 1900 until 1999, which was when the new bodega was constructed, the family wines were made in their traditional cellar underneath the medieval town of Laguardia.  Raimundo and his wife, Cristina, run the winery today and make remarkable Rioja wines using only estate fruit.  The vineyards are tended naturally and organically, and the wines are fermented using native yeasts and absolutely minimal filtration.  As a result, they make exceptional Rioja that brings together historic practices in the cellar while also taking advantage of modern techniques. These are beautiful and layered wines, high-toned, silky, and elegant expressions of Tempranillo grown in calcareous clay soils mixed with sand and rock.
